Concept:
Sendai Mediatheque opened in the beginning of the 21st century as a base for art cultural hub. It is expected that cultural activities, flexibly respond to changes in the society, are held by people in the transparent space with fantastic design.

Style:
The building is consisted of small columns, large columns and the floor panels. The tube columns look as if these were seaweed wavering in the sea. These are made up of some steel tubes, which hold both the horizontal force and the vertical load. The steel Honeycomb floors, which are quite thin and strong, are connected with each other in between the columns.

Features:
A total of 6,000 tons of steel were used for the building. We used tube column of 2,000 tons of steel and a floor panel of 4,000 tons of steel. This special construction was created by the field welding. Altogether, the welded steels reach the length of 500km. There were some difficult problems, such as heat shrink and heat strain, which are caused by welding. We could overcome these problems by using shipbuilding techinology. We believe that Sendai Mediatheque is the building that is created by a combination of art and technology.
